The Honors Program

National Honor Society

Admission:

Membership into the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. Chapters across the nation strive to give practical meaning to the Society's goals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These four ideals are considered the basis for a student's selection.

At the end of the sophomore and junior years, students receiving a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be informed of their scholastic eligibility. Students will be required to submit a Student Activity Information Form by the published date and time to be considered for membership by the faculty council. The Faculty Council is appointed by the principal and consists of non-voting advisors and five voting faculty members. The Faculty Council will review the Student Activity Information Forms on the basis of a demonstration of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Student candidates who receive a majority vote of the Faculty Council will be notified of their membership into the chapter.

Accepting membership incurs a responsibility and obligation to continue to demonstrate the outstanding qualities that resulted in a student's selection. It means accepting the responsibility to maintain active participation in school and community projects, to encourage and practice leadership, and to maintain high standards of scholarship.

Member obligations are:

  • Maintain a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Attend all meetings (with two excused absences allowed)
  • Perform a minimum of ten hours of service per year
  • Comply with all policies of Harford County Board of Education and Bel Air High School

Bel Air High School's Chapter Bylaws for the Constitution of the National Honor Society were revised and became effective for students inducted in the 2001-2002 school year. Students inducted during the 2001-2002 school year and thereafter are required to adhere to the Chapter Bylaws. The Chapter Bylaws can be found in the school library. Questions about the National Honor Society should be directed to the advisor, Ms. Barber, or any of the NHS officers.

Tutoring:

The Bel Air High School Chapter of the National Honor Society proudly offers tutoring in most subject areas. Tutoring is offered every Tuesday in room 129. No appointment is necessary. Students who wish to receive tutoring services need only come to room 129 after school, bringing their work materials with them.
