Scholarships The following scholarship information is provided on a monthly basis by our own Mrs. Guzewich. SENIORS: All transcript requests must be made 5 business days prior to the due date. Please do not expect guidance to publish your transcript in less than the required 5 days. “Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency for the guidance department to publish your transcript.” APRIL 2007 SCHOLARSHIPS I Association of Public School Administrators and Supervisors Scholarship: The annual APSASHC scholarships, valued at $1000, will be awarded in mid-May. This one time scholarship will be presented to two students on the basis of academic excellence, activities and leadership qualities. All applicants must be a resident of Harford County who will graduate from a Harford County Public School, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and will pursue a degree in Education. All completed applications must be received no later than 3:00 pm on May 10, 2007. Bel Air Decorative Painters: Bel Air Decorative Painters is sponsoring a $500 college scholarship for a 2007 Harford County graduating senior who will be studying art in college. Applicants will be evaluated on future plans for their artistic talents, extent of past art training, scholastic achievement, leadership, and community service. The completed application is due no later than April 20, 2007. Chevron T. Pace Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend college with a major in Engineering or Architecture. The value of the scholarship is $500. Emmorton Elementary PTA: The Emmorton Elementary PTA is committed to excellence in education. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to both a graduating male and female who completed their 5th grade year at Emmorton Elementary. The scholarship will be awarded to the student who has demonstrated a solid academic performance with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, participated in extra-curricular activities and has served their community. The completed application must be submitted no later than May 1, 2007. Harford County Association of Realtors, Inc: The Harford County Association of Realtors is seeking graduating seniors who plan to attend a Maryland college in the fall of 2007 for a scholarship opportunity. John Archer PTA Scholarship: Two scholarships each valued at $1500 will be awarded this year to graduating seniors planning to pursue a career as a special educator. Requirements are few. Namely, the applicant must have been a Harford County resident for the past two years and the students plans to pursue a career in special education in Harford County. Completed applications are due no later than May 7, 2007. Northeastern Maryland Kennel Club, Inc.: The kennel club is offering a $3000 scholarship to the first place applicant and a $2000 to the second place applicant who is or will be enrolled in a field of study that involves animal sciences. The following criteria must be met for consideration for this scholarship:
Entries must be received by June 1, 2007. Application is available in guidance. Stanley Goldberg Memorial Scholarship: This is a scholarship offered through HCC. The Goldberg scholarship is sponsored by HAR-CO and is offered to a Harford County graduating senior who has been accepted and will attend HCC. This scholarship is valued at $1000. This money is to be used for the student’s tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment. To apply, the student must be a member of HAR-CO with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The completed application must be submitted no later than April 27, 2007. Act today if interested. Susana deMoya Foundation: This scholarship is directed to graduating seniors from families who have come from the Dominican Republic and are first or second generation in the U.S. The mission of the Foundation is to “merit and inspire Dominican excellence by awarding a prize for educational purposes to the selected candidates.” The foundation’s goals include “providing financial assistance, encouragement, mentors, and establish activities to young Dominican students.” For more information refer to the web page at www.sdmfoundation.org The merit award ranges in value from $500 to $2500. The completed application is due no later than May 5, 2007. MARCH 2007 SCHOLARSHIPS II John Archer PTA Scholarship Committee 410-638-3810 or 410-638 3811 (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) John Archer's PTA scholarship committee will be awarding two scholarships for students in pursuing careers in special education. The PTA Scholarship and the William E. Memphis Memorial Scholarship are each providing $1,500 awards to the winning applicants. The scholarships will be awarded to a high school senior (or to a college student with at least four semesters remaining) who has been a Harford County resident for at least the last two years. The Memphis Scholarship additionally stipulates that the recipient plans to teach special education in Harford County after graduation. These are two-year disbursement scholarships. The initial payment will be made upon proof of enrollment, and a minimum grade-point of 2.5 must be maintained for subsequent payments. The application, transcript(s) and letters of reference must be submitted to the committee no later than May 7, 2007. Applicants will automatically be considered for both scholarships. American Legion: This organization is offering a $1000 non-renewable scholarship to a graduating senior from the Bel Air area high schools. The selection will be based on community service activities, academic achievement, essay, and career goals. An additional $1000 scholarship will be offered to children or grandchildren of current members of Post #39. The completed application is due no later than April 13, 2006. Cecil-Harford Chapter Maryland Municipal League: This scholarship is directed to a graduating senior who has been accepted to a college or university in a program intended to prepare students for a career in governmental or public service. If you plan to major in this field, investigate this scholarship. The completed application must be received no later than April 11, 2007. Darlington Elementary School PTA; Darlington Elementary is offering a book grant valued at $250.00 to former students of Darlington Elementary who attended the school for at least three years. Additional requirements are that the applicants be graduating from high school in 2006, attending college in the fall , hold at least a 3.2 GPA and currently be active in the high school and community activities. All applications should be returned by April 19, 2007. Fashion Group Foundation of Washington DC, Inc.: The Fashion Group Scholarship is designed for students majoring in fashion, fashion related fields or interior design with awards of up to $5000 for one academic year. The applicant must have demonstrated academic achievement and involvement in the fashion field. To apply, you must be admitted to an accredited college or university. The completed application must be postmarked no later than April 21, 2007. Great Clips: Maryland franchisees and Great Clips, Inc. are sponsoring one $500 scholarship for individuals interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering. This scholarship can be used at any accredited cosmetology or barbering school in the counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, Cecil, Harford and Howard counties. The completed application, essay and letter of recommendation must be received by the committee no later than May 15, 2007. Harford County Education Association: HCEA is offering a $1500 scholarship to a graduating senior planning to enter the teaching profession. The application is available in guidance and must be postmarked no later than March 30, 2007. Harford County Cancer and Tobacco Community Coalition: HCCTCC strives to create a healthier environment for all Harford County residents both young and old. This organization is planning to award three $500 scholarships to 3 Harford County graduating seniors who have thus far lived a tobacco free and drug free life and plan to continue to live tobacco and drug free in the future. HCCTCC plans to reward those students who have chosen to be tobacco and drug free and live healthy. The completed applications are due no later than April 27, 2007. Applications are available in guidance. Harford Memorial Hospital: The Auxiliary of Harford Memorial Hospital is offering five scholarships in the amount of $1000 each to five graduating seniors planning to attend a degree granting college or university to pursue studies toward a degree in any health related area. Please stop by guidance to photo-copy the application. The completed application must be postmarked no later than April 26, 2007 so that the Auxiliary can receive it by April 30. Jim Whitehurst Scholarship: Mr. Whitehurst was a teacher and basketball coach at BAHS for many years. Just recently Mr. Whitehurst passed away and his family has created a scholarship in his honor. The Whitehurst family is looking for male athletes who have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA. Please write a letter to Mr. Pat Whitehurst detailing your sports endeavors, your goals, your achievements and your plan to use the scholarship money. The completed letters should be given to guidance before April 30, 2007. John Archer PTA Scholarship: Two scholarships, John Archer PTA and William E. Memphis, each valued at $1500 will be awarded this year to graduating seniors planning to pursue a career as a special educator. Requirements are few. Completed applications are due no later than May 7, 2007. Junior League of Baltimore, INC.: It is with great pleasure that the Junior League of Baltimore announces the Sustainer’s Service Award. The award, valued at $1000, will be given to a female graduating senior who has performed outstanding volunteer service during her public high school years. Nominations for this award must com from a school administrator, guidance counselor, or faculty member, or any member of the Junior League. Neither financial need nor academic standing will be determining factors in selecting the recipient. Maryland Emergency Management Association: This association is offering four $1000 scholarships to 2007 graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in Emergency Management or a related field. The scholarship will be awarded based on the quality of a student’s essay, community involvement, student records, grades, financial need, and personal references. The completed essay and application must be submitted no later than April 1, 2007. Maryland Students Who Hail from the Dominican Republic: Scholarship opportunities are available for Maryland students whose families come from the Dominican Republic and are first or second generation in the USA. Merit awards range from $500 to $2500 with an application deadline of April 30, 2007. This year the foundation is also accepting applications from dependent of active duty reservists and National Guard military personnel. Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Volunteer Services Association: The Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Volunteer Services Association is offering 10 scholarships in the amount of $1000 each to students entering a medical related field. All completed applications must be received by Upper Chesapeake by Friday, April 13, 2007.
MARCH 2007 SCHOALRSHIPS I Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Xi Delta Omega Chapter: The Harford County Chapter of this sorority is currently accepting applications for their annual Scholarship Program. The purpose of this program is to provide funds to deserving students planning to further their education beyond high school. Four scholarships are available; the Sara E. Roye Memorial Scholarship valued at $1500, the Mildred G. Stansbury Memorial Scholarship valued at $1000, a book scholarship valued at $500 and an athletic scholarship valued at $500. Each scholarship has its own criteria to qualify so please stop by guidance to read the actual application. All completed must be submitted no later than April 20, 2007. The Branner/Shanks Scholarship Award: The purpose of this scholarship valued at $500 is to provide both subsidization-based and supplemental-financial aid to a young, promising American man or woman who has been accepted to an accredited 2-year or 4-year academic institution. This scholarship will be a jump-start to a promising, young man or woman who has been accepted to a university or college but lacks financial resources to attend. To apply, the student must have at least a 2.5 GPA with the community service requirement completed and is active in extracurricular activities. The completed application must be submitted no later than Mary 1, 2007. CITE Scholarship: To apply for this scholarship, the student must be an African-American US citizen. The applicant must has at least a 3.0 GPA and has been accepted by an accredited college/university. The total family income of the applicant must be no more than $55,000 per year. The completed application must be received no later than Friday, March 23, 2007 Flora H. Wiley Book Grant: The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an honor society for women educators. The Tau Chapter of Harford County is offering the annual Flora H. Wiley Book Grant in the amount of $500 to a female graduating senior. The recipient must be a female student who plans to attend a degree-granting college or university to pursue studies toward a degree in education. The completed application must be postmarked no later than March 24, 2007. These scholarships will be awarded to deserving young ladies to assist them in furthering their post-secondary education. The scholarship is directed to females in need of financial assistance for post-secondary education. The completed application with a personal statement must be postmarked no later than April 6, 2007. Scholarship awards will be made payable to the post secondary institution and the scholarship recipient. Harford County Education Association: HCEA is offering a $1500 scholarship to a graduating senior planning to enter the teaching profession. The application is available in guidance and must be postmarked no later than March 30, 2007. Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP): MAESP is pleased to offer a scholarship to prospective elementary school teachers. The scholarship award` is valued at $1000. The recipient must attend a college or university in Maryland to be considered. The completed form must be postmarked no later than April 18, 2007. Maryland Association of Private Colleges and Career Schools Scholarship: The MAPCCS committee will award the 2007 scholarships as provided by the career schools participating in this annual program. This list is extensive and includes various career schools which train in barbering, cosmetology, medical assisting, dental assisting, broadcasting, nail technician, massage therapy, just to name a few. The completed application must be submitted no later than March 23, 2007. If planning to attend a career school, please stop by guidance and investigate this application. Your career school may be one of the schools offering a scholarship. Morris & Ritchie Associates, Inc. Student Scholarship for Engineering & Architecture: This scholarship is directed to a graduating senior intending for pursue a college degree program in engineering and/or architecture. Bel Air High School is permitted to submit the name of one senior for this particular scholarship. The deadline for the submission of nominee name is March 31st. If you plan to major in engineering or architecture, submit your name to guidance ASAP. New Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program: The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) has launched a new program designed to assist veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts and their families who enroll in undergraduate programs at Maryland colleges and universities. Applicants must be Maryland residents. This includes active members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their spouses, and their dependent children who are stationed in the State of Maryland or whose home of residency is Maryland, and be enrolled full-time or part-time as an undergraduate student at an eligible Maryland institution. The award is equivalent to 50% of annual tuition and mandatory fees and room and board and may not exceed $8850 per academic year. Paul Penley Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is directed to any high school senior who is interested in continuing education in the field of broadcasting. A 100 word essay is required with the application as well as two letters of recommendation and a transcript. The completed application must be received no later than April 10, 2007.
February 2007 Scholarships ALFRED ANDERSON MATH/SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship was established to award a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving Harford County Public High School senior for the purpose of continuing post high school study of mathematics/science. BAHS can nominate one senior for this scholarship. The nominee must have been a full-time HCPS student in grades 11 and 12, and must have at least a 3.5 GPA in math or science. Lastly, the nominee must have earned a minimum of 4 credits in math and science. If you qualify, please submit your name to your math or science teacher for consideration. BILLY TYLER TECHNOLOGY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Tyler, at the time of his death, was just about to finish his last year at Southhampton Middle School and would have then attended C.M. Wright. Tragically, a speeding, negligent driver took his live on June 16, 2003. This scholarship was established to honor his memory. May 2007 marks the year Tyler would have graduated. This year, two scholarships ($500 & $1,000) are being offered to those choosing to attend a 2-4 year college, going into the field of Medical, Animal Science, or Music. GPA of 3.0 or better. Application and essay must be submitted no later than May 1, 2007. CYNTHIA E. MORGAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship awards $500 to a Maryland high school or college student who is a first-generation college student, and will attend a Maryland college (or medical school) with a major in a medical-related field. WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP: This award of $500 will be awarded to a deserving HCPS senior for the purpose of continuing his/her post high school study in pursuit of a teaching/education certificate. One BAHS senior may be nominated for this award. Criteria: Must be a Harford County resident, and nominee shall have been a full-time HCPS student. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, demonstrated community involvement, and nominee shall have been accepted for admission to a college or university by Spring of 2007. Application for nomination is available in Guidance. Completed application must be received in guidance by March 10th. EDUCATION EXCHANGE COLLEGE GRANT PROGRAM: This program will award a total of $50,000 in college grants to 34 high school seniors. To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria: high school senior at time of application, U.S. citizen, provide written acceptance to an accredited 4-year college by May 17th, and financial need. Further information is listed on the application. Deadline is March 15, 2007. EPILEPSY FOUNDATION: The Ira Rosenzwog Scholarship Fund was established as a memorial to Mr. Rosenzwog for his many years of volunteer work and contributions to the Epilepsy Foundation. Applicant must have a diagnosis of epilepsy supported by documentation from the treating physician, submit an application and essay. Applications are in the guidance office. Deadline is April 20, 2007. GERALD JEFFEIN $500 SCHOLARSHIP: This award is in the amount of $500 is offered to graduating seniors pursuing an undergraduate college degree. Criteria: academic performance, extracurricular school activities, community service, pursuing a degree in marketing or business major, and employment in the retail industry. Applications are in the guidance office. Deadline is February 28, 2007. HAR-CO MARYLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION: Two different scholarships are offered: The $1,000 HAR-CO Credit Union scholarship for students attending a four year college or university beginning Fall 2007, and the $1,000 Stanley Goldberg Memorial Scholarship for students attending Harford Community College as a full-time student beginning Fall 2007. Students applying are required to be a member of HAR-CO Credit Union at the time of application. Membership is open to all Harford county students and is easily available by coming to any HAR-CO Credit Union office. Applications are available in guidance. Deadline is April 27, 2007. HARFORD COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Several scholarships are being offered by the Chamber of Commerce. They are high performance manufacturing, medical/health, business, Teacher Education and Science. The values of these scholarships range from two years at Harford Community College to $1,000 payable to your college/university. If interested in pursuing a career in one of the aforementioned vocations, please obtain an application from guidance. Specific criteria for each scholarship are detailed in the application. Deadline is April 15, 2007. HUETHER-MCCLELLAND FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: This generous $7,000 (per year) scholarship was established to award a HCPS senior for the purpose of continuing post high school studies in engineering. Each school can nominate one student. The nomination and completed application must be submitted no later than March 10th. If interested in pursuing engineering in college, please submit your name to your school counselor and pick up an application. INTERNATIONAL TEST AND EVALUATION ASSOCIATION: This organization is offering a scholarship to Harford and Cecil County High School Seniors who will be pursuing a degree in any of the physical sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Award will be at least $1,500. Criteria: Degree in field listed above, academic performance, with emphasis on science and math courses, participation in science and math related extracurricular school activities, employment in science and math related industries. Deadline is April 7, 2007. JANET HARDY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Janet Hardy Memorial Scholarship was initiated in memory of Janet Marie Hardy to assist a graduating High School Senior with higher educational tuition. Janet was killed by a drunk driver on October 26, 2003 at the age of 13. She was a freshman at Perryville High and loved soccer. To apply, you must hat at least a 3.25 GPA, must have participated in at least on season of soccer during high school, must be drug and alcohol free, and been accepted to a 2 or 4 year college. Applications are in guidance. Deadline is May 1, 2007. HARFORD COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Harford County Environmental Scholarship Program awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of Harford County’s nine high schools. Criteria: intent to pursue a career that would promote environmental quality, demonstrated commitment to volunteer efforts for the improvement of the environment, past performance in academic achievement. Applications are in guidance. Deadline is April 10th. HARFORD COUNTY RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS: This organization will offer two $1,000 scholarships to students attending Harford County Public Schools and whose parents and/or grandparents are presently employed or have retired from HCPS. If you meet this criteria applies to you, please apply for this scholarship and postmark the completed application no later than March 31, 2007. MARYLAND PTA SCHOLARSHIP: The Maryland PTA offers scholarships at a minimum of $300 a year to high school graduates who plan to pursue a career in education in the public schools of Maryland. The following factors will be considered with each application: achievement, financial need, community involvement, character, local PTA sponsorship. Applications due by March 15, 2007. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS: This organization is pleased to announce its Barbara Balter Entrepreneurial Spirit Scholarship program. Award amount is $1,000. Criteria: Must be a female high school senior graduating in Spring 2007, taken SAT examination, business or entrepreneurial project must be ongoing or have occurred in the past and demonstrate “Entrepreneurial Spirit.” Online applications are available at www.nawbomaryland.org/wh scholarship.phtml . Deadline is March 31, 2007. NORTHROP GRUMMAN awards a $10,000 scholarship to one graduating high school student in each Maryland County for students who are entering college to pursue a degree in engineering. To be considered, you must be a resident of Maryland, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, a composite SAT score of 1700, and plan to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. Applications and detailed instructions are available in guidance. Deadline is March 31st. PAST PRESIDENTS’ HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is awarded annually by the Society to an outstanding student of Scottish descent who is entering his/her freshman year of college. If you are of Scottish descent, stop by the guidance deparment and pick up further information about this scholarship awarded in the amount of up to $4,000 per year. Deadline is March 15th. PSTA (BEL AIR HIGH SCHOOL) The Bel Air High School PSTA will offer 6 - $1,000 non-renewable scholarships to graduating Bel Air High School seniors. Applications are available in guidance and must be submitted no later than 2:30 on Friday, April 6, 2007. Criteria listed in order of priority:
RACHEL CARSON SCHOLAR PROGRAM: The goal of the Rachel Carson Scholar Program is to recognize and honor students with a strong academic background who are taking active roles in environmental stewardship in their community. Criteria: Cumulative GPA of 3.0 through the first semester of 2006/07, participated in volunteer or community services environmental activities, and is a high school junior or senior on track to graduate in the spring of their senior year. Deadline is April 2, 2007. SENATORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Who may apply: Current high school seniors and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. Students attending a private career school may also apply. How to apply: Complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If your senator makes his/her own awards, you must call or write to your legislator for further instructions. The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) can provide a list of all State legislators. When to apply: Complete and file the FAFSA by March 1. Contact your senator in February for further instructions. Eligible majors: All majors are eligible. You may use this scholarship at an out-of-state school if your major is not available at a Maryland school, and if your senator agrees. OSFA must verify that your major is unique. Contact OSFA for further information on unique major status. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS You and your parents (if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university, as a full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student, or attend certain private career schools. Audited courses cannot be used to reach the minimum credit hours required for full-time or part-time status. You must demonstrate financial need. You must take the SAT 1 or the ACT unless you graduated from high school five or more years ago; have earned 24 college credit hours; or are attending a community college or a private career school. FINANCIAL NEED Some senators ask OSFA to make awards for them. These awards are made on the basis of need as demonstrated on the FAFSA. AWARD AMOUNT The minimum annual award amount is $200 and the maximum award is $2,000. You may hold the Senatorial Scholarship with all State awards. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office or $18,300, whichever is less. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.

JANUARY 2007 SCHOLARSHIPS II AIMMS Excellence Scholarship Awards: The AIMMS Excellence Scholarship Awards recognize students who have make significant contributions to better understandings among groups and appreciation of the value of diversity among people. Applications are due no later than January 10, 2006. Students may nominate themselves for this award. The nominee must have demonstrated leadership in addressing diversity and helping others. The recipient must be a student in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Botany, Forestry, Conservation, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, City Landscape Planning, Environmental Concerns and/or allied subjects. The completed application must be submitted no later than April 16, 2007. The Delmarva Farmer Scholarship: The application for this scholarship is filed in guidance. This scholarship is funded by the Delmarva Farmer Gold Tournament and is available to members of farm families, to those employed in an ag-related field, and to those students who are dependents of employees of agribusiness and ag agencies. The completed application must be submitted no later than March 1, 2007. The Izaak Walton League of America: The Harford County Chapter of the Izaack Walton League of America is offering the John S. Smith Memorial Conservation Scholarship in the amount of $1000 to Harford County seniors who plan to pursue a career in conservation, environmental studies, or education regarding out natural resources. The completed application is due no later than March 23, 2007 so postmark no later than March 20, 2007. Maryland Retailers Association Educational Foundation, INC (Gerald Jeffein Scholarship): This association offers the Jeffein Scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a college education. This year, the foundation is planning to award a $500 scholarship to a student from each school system. Completed applications must be received no later than February 28, 2007. McKelvey Foundation: The McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship is available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own businesses while in high school. To qualify for this scholarship, a graduating senior must plan to attend a 4-year college or university within the 50 states, own and operate a genuine business (non-profits are eligible) and have at least one employee. The completed application must be submitted on line by January 31, 2007. North Carolina Wesleyan College: North Carolina Wesleyan College is again offering their Valedictorian Scholarship. The scholarships range from $7500 to full tuition and are renewable for up to four years of full-time day school study. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation: The foundation provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships to deserving sons and daughters of current or former United States Marines in their pursuit of higher education. In addition, the 4th Marine Division Association of WWII, the 6th Marine Division Association, and the 531 Gray Ghost Squadron offer scholarships to grandchildren of their members. Mount St. Mary’s University: Mount St’ Mary’s is sponsoring the Kuderer Scholarship essay competition for outstanding high school seniors on January 20 and January 27th. The Kuderer Scholarship is a four year, full tuition scholarship, with an expected cumulative value of over $90,000. Three students in the St. Mary’s incoming freshman class will each be awarded this scholarship. All applying students must have scored at least 1200 on the SAT’s and have at least a 3.25 GPA. Elks National Foundation: The Elks National Foundation awards five different scholarships and grants through their organization. Selection for the Most Valuable Student Scholarship is based on scholarship, leadership, and financial need while the ENF Legacy Awards, valued at $1000, is searching for a student whose parent or grandparent is an Elk in good standing. The Emergency Educational Grants offer assistance to children of Elks who are deceased or totally incapacitated. Lastly The Elks National Foundation awards eight Eagle Scout scholarships each year and eight scholarships to girl scouts who have achieved the Gold Award. Fashion Institute of Technology: Students interested in business, marketing, art and design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC are invited to investigate the Presidential Scholars Program. This honors program offers outstanding students the opportunity to explore New York City and participate in stimulating colloquia and advanced liberal arts classes taught by some of the college’s finest instructors. Harford County Farm Bureau: This organization will make available a scholarship(s) to any graduating senior who has been a 4-H member for at least two years. The Benjamin Keyes Scholarship is named in memory of Ben Keyes who was a very active 4-H member who died from cancer at age twelve. Maryland Farm Bureau: The Maryland Farm Bureau will offer ten $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are members (or their parents/guardians) of the Maryland Farm Bureau. Seven of the scholarships will be offered to agricultural curriculum majors and three scholarships will be offered to non-agricultural or agricultural curriculum majors. Completed applications must be received no later than March 1, 2007. Maryland Media, Inc: We are pleased to announce the Maryland Media, Inc. Scholarship for the University of Maryland at College Park. The goal of this scholarship program is to recruit and retain talented student journalists for Maryland Media, Inc.’s publications. OCTOBER 2006 SCHOLARSHIPS II AES ENGINEERS; The scholarships offered by AES Engineers are intended for future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. OCTOBER 2006 SCHOLARSHIPS I Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association: AFCEA is a world-wide association for communications, electronics, information systems, and intelligence professionals. The Captain John A. Skinner Scholarship award program, established in 1987, promotes higher education in scientific and engineering areas. This past year, eight outstanding students from Central Maryland were awarded scholarships of $8000. Six scholarships each valued at $8000 ($2000 for each year of a four-year academic education) will be awarded to outstanding, well-rounded high school seniors who are planning to enter a science or engineering field of study supportive of national defense. Students selected in the past have generally had at least a 3.3 GPA and at least a 1200 SAT score. All completed applications must be received no later than December 23rd, 2006. Boston University: Boston University has announced to 30th annual Boston Trustee Scholarship Competition. This program recognizes students with outstanding academic ability and the potential to inspire fellow students to excel. Trustee Scholars are selected by a faculty committee at this school. Each Scholar receives a renewable scholarship covering full undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees. To be eligible, all candidates must be nominated by their principal and submit all necessary forms, including an application for undergraduate admission, nomination, supplemental essay, and results of the SAT or ACR by December 1, 2006 to your guidance counselor. Boston University Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship: This scholarship is dedicated to acknowledging those students who have embraced the ideals of Boston University’s most prominent alumni. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The King scholarship will provide renewable full-tuition awards for academically gifted students with proven leadership abilities and a strong commitment to social justice and community involvement. James Madison University’s Bluestone Scholarship: In the Bluestone Scholarship program, two significant scholarships are offered; the Thomas and Karyn Dingledine Scholarship and the Madison Achievement Scholarship. The Dingledine scholarship offers full in-state tuition for four years and awards six scholarships annually. The Madison Scholarship offers 60 awards annually and they range in value from $2000 for two years to $500 for one year. If you plan on attending JMU, investigate these scholarship opportunities. National Society Daughters of the American Revolution: The DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in an accredited public or private secondary school. The faulty of the school is to select three students whom they feel embody the qualities necessary for this award. From the three, the senior class is to select the one student whom they feel should represent the school. If interested, please submit your name to guidance. UMBC’s Premier Scholarship Programs: UMBC offers four scholarship programs; the Humanities Scholars, the Linehan Artist Scholars, the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars, abd the CWIT Scholars. Washington and Lee University: This university located in Lexington, Virginia offers two full-tuition scholarships for students who have demonstrated exemplary academic and extracurricular records. The Keelty and Kemp Scholarships are renewable for all four years of study provided the students maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Only students from the Baltimore area are eligible for these two scholarships. The two scholarships were established to recognize students who excel in the classroom and rank at the top of their classes, yet are also campus leaders and substantial contributors to their school’s communities. SEPTEMBER 2006 SCHOLARSHIPS I The Alfred C. O’Connell Honors Scholarship: This scholarship covers the cost of tuition and fees for two years at HCC. Twenty scholarships are available to high school level students, and five scholarships are awarded to current HCC students. COCA-COLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION: The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 150-250 merit-based scholarships to outstanding seniors. Fifty awards are for $20000 and the remaining 100 awards are for $4000 (payable in equal installments over a 4-year period). The foundation is searching for well-rounded individuals with highly developed interests in the community. The students spend time volunteering, initiating programs of all kinds, tutoring youngsters or peers, and are leaders in their schools.
